A TRIAL pop-up cafe that serves meals from ingredients that would have otherwise have gone to waste opened its doors for the first time in Kendal on Saturday.

Kendal People's Cafe serves meals from food and ingredients that are still in date but would otherwise have gone to waste.

Today's menu includes such delights as a chicken curry with herb rice, lettuce and pak choi soup and aubergine, and pancakes with mango orange syrup for dessert.

The brainchild of freelance chef and artist Helen Pateman, the venture is based on the successful Lancaster People's Cafe.

The cafe has been buzzing since opening at the South Lakes Foyer Resource Centre and Cafe at noon.

Helen said: "It has been a fantastic day so far. We have received a lot of positive feedback.

"At 9.30 this morning we had a bunch of volunteers to arrive, who we had never met before, offering to help. I thought I was going to cry."

Darren Randal, who works at the Lancaster People's Cafe, arrived from Endmoor to support the venture with his mother, Amanda Webb.

"I had the mixed bean curry, and it was the best curry I've had in a long time. It was amazing, absolutely amazing," Amanda said. "And I had the apple and raspberry crumble as dessert. That was really nice as well."

"This is such an amazing idea, we wanted to support this by coming down today," Darren said. "Working at a People's Cafe has been an incredible experience. Not only you get to help people and your community, but it's such a positive experience for your personal growth and your personal journey. It's truly a blessing."

The organisers are hoping to make Kendal People's Cafe a regular feature at the South Lakes Foyer.
