A WOMAN who died following a house fire in the early hours of Mother's Day morning in Kendal has been identified.

Emergency services were called to a report of a house fire on Stramongate at the centre of town at 2.40am. 

Kathleen Holme, 67, of Stramongate, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary but has subsequently died.

Another casualty, a man, was also taken to hospital.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder the same day.

He has now been bailed until May 14, as the investigation into the fire continues.
Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the fire at this time.

Part of the town centre was cordoned off while emergency services and firefighters tackled the blaze and helped those hurt.

Firefighters, two wearing breathing apparatus, used a hose reel jet to bring the fire under control.

Five casualties were reported and given medical attention by firefighters and ambulance crews. 

Fire crews, who attended from Kendal, Milnthorpe and Staveley, were at the scene for around three hours.

Cumbria Police is working with its colleagues at Cumbria Fire and Rescue as the investigation continues.
