A CARING South Lakeland boy wants to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer by riding his bike to Lancaster and beyond.

Fynlay Dodd-Hemingway, from Kendal, will be cycling as many miles as he can on April 1 in a bid to raise £250 for Children with Cancer UK and The Lullaby Trust, charities which he chose himself.

Seven-year-old Fynlay came up with the idea to raise money for children with cancer during a bike ride with his mother, Carly.

"He started asking me about cancer, why children get cancer, why there isn't a cure for it," said Mrs Dodd-Hemingway. "After that he wanted to do his little part to help raise money. It's all his idea."

Fynlay decided to donate part of the money raised to the Lullaby Trust, which provides support for bereaved families and raises awareness on sudden infant death.

Mrs Dodd-Hemingway said: "We are immensely proud of Fynlay. He is a lovely, kind and caring boy. It's not very often a seven-year-old comes up with an idea for a charity bike ride."

Fynlay, whose longest bike ride in the past has been 25 miles, has already raised over £150 towards his target in online and offline donations.

"Fynlay isn't a member of any cycling club, he just enjoys going for bike rides with me at a weekend on his basic bike, with no fancy gears," said Mrs Dodd-Hemingway. "So the challenge he has set himself is quite an impressive one for a seven-year-old."

On the day, the Heron Hill student and his mother, who teaches at the school, will be setting off first thing in the morning wearing charity vests and are hoping for a good weather.

If Fynlay is keen, the pair may be pedalling further than Lancaster.

"Everything will happen on his terms," Mrs Dodd-Hemingway said. "We'll see how far we can reach. If he wants to continue, we'll continue. If he gets tired, we'll stop."
