Yet again people travelling through the South Lakes were subjected to miles of tailbacks due to inept traffic management.

On Saturday morning, which happened to be a beautiful spring day, roadworks on the A591 at the Waterhead junction were being carried out. This required a three-way traffic lights system to be set up.

The timing of the lights allowed the same amount of vehicles to proceed through the junction from all three directions although around 90 per cent of the traffic was arriving from the south. This caused massive tailbacks between Ings and Ambleside.

I understand the need to carry out repairs to local gas services but this in itself was not the cause of of the misery felt by locals and tourists alike.

As we all know on a typical weekend day most of the traffic enters the area from the south in the morning and then heads south later in the afternoon. So why can't the sequence of the lights be adjusted to reflect this pattern? Surely it's just common sense.
