MP TIM Farron says money is urgently needed to tackle the bed-blocking 'crisis' in Cumbria.
The Lib Dem leader said recent figures showed more than 100 hospital beds a day are taken up by patients whose release has been delayed by problems in the social care system.
Mr Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, said statistics analysed by the BBC showed Cumbria's bed-blocking rate was "the worst in the country".
He is calling on the Government to boost funding to ease the problem, and said: "In an area like ours with a significant proportion of elderly residents, it is vital to have properly funded social care for local people. It is a matter of health and a matter of dignity."
