A YEAR since a young Kendal mum lost her brave battle against cancer, the pub she worked in is hosting a charity fundraiser.

Cassie Atkinson died on April 1 last year, aged 28, after being struck down with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Now, the new landlady of The Clock Tower, formerly known as Last Orders, where Cassie worked, is hoping to raise money for a cancer charity in her memory.

"A young lady came in on Saturday to see us and to see if she could put some collection boxes for her sister who used to work in the pub," said Caroline Hague. "I said: 'Wwhy don't we do one better - on Saturday (April 1) we'll try to organise a charity event."

Having only worked at the Allhallows Lane pub for the past eight weeks, Caroline did not personally know Cassie but staff members did, as do many of the regulars.

"Everybody I've spoken to about her said that she was a lovely person," Caroline said. "There's not been a bad word said about her, they've all said she was amazing. Great when she was working and when she wasn't working."

Cassie herself was a great fundraiser and organised a climb up Ben Nevis and an event at Kendal Rugby Club, raising more than £8,000 for cancer-related charities.

Starting at 7pm, Caroline wants to organise music for the evening, will be putting on food and hopes to get local businesses to donate raffle prizes.

Jennie Allcock, a member of staff at the pub who knew Cassie, said that she 'always had a smile on her face' and 'nothing would get her down'.

The money raised will go to the Marie Curie charity, which provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness, and their families.

"I think it's because cancer does affect everybody," Caroline said, explaining why she had chosen to hold the fundraiser. "Plus I love my job and I love my customers and they knew Cassie."

If any businesses would be willing to donate to the raffle, they can contact Caroline on 07960232217.
