THE owner of a South Cumbrian zoo has officially lodged an appeal against an order to close the attraction.

At the start of March Barrow Borough Council made an order to close South Lakes Safari Zoo, at Dalton-in-Furness, to the public.

It followed the committee unanimously agreeing to refuse the owner, David Gill, a new licence.

Karen Brewer, CEO of Cumbria Zoo Company, the firm responsible for the running of the zoo, said Mr Gill has begun the process of appealing their decisions.

"David Gill appealed the rulings by Barrow Council which means the zoo remains open whilst the appeal is determined giving Cumbria Zoo Company time for our Licencing application to be heard," she said.

The authority's licensing committee made the closure order after finding failures on the licence, which has expired, to comply with a direction order requiring a robust management structure in place.

Cumbria Zoo Company will have a hearing to assess a licence application of its own in the coming weeks.
