A YOUNG boy was airlifted to hospital after he slipped and hurt himself during a visit to Honister Slate Mine last Thursday.

The boy, who was a part of an organised group from an activity centre, slipped while on the last part of the mine's underground via ferrata.

Although it was a minor fall, due to his injury and the boy complaining of back pain, it was treated as a suspected spinal injury.

This involved placing the boy on a vacuum mattress and then stretchered out by members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.

A spokesperson said: "This was no mean feat in a mine with low roofs, inclines and deep water from the recent rains.

"The quickest route out involved coming out of the mine, down the incline across the main crag at honister and then back into the mine at a lower level."

After that the boy was transferred by Keswick Mountain Rescue Team to the waiting helicopter, part of the North West Air Ambulance Charity.

He was then flown to Furness General Hospital.

The rescue took two hours and 15 minutes from 18 team members.
