A NEW report throws fresh hope over the future of the much-troubled South Lakes Safari Zoo.

Inspectors heaped praise on improvements made at the Dalton attraction since Cumbria Zoo Company (CZC) took over its running from founder David Gill two months ago.

The 21-page document recommends unanimously that the company, led by chief executive Karen Brewer, should be given a licence at a Barrow Borough Council hearing later this year.

The news comes following months of uncertainty after Mr Gill was refused a new licence and the zoo was issued with a closure order.

Mr Gill appealed against the refusal - buying time for the CZC to be inspected.

The report said: "It is as if the blinds have been lifted up, and sunlight is now pouring into the room."
