A GROUP of teenagers were rescued after becoming stuck on a slag bank yesterday evening.

The group had been on top of the slag bank adjacent to Walney Channel in Barrow, when one of them had slipped and fallen down for a distance of approximately 50 feet. 

The scene was being attended by Furness Coastguard personnel and Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team.

When the rescue services arrived, one of the teenagers was on the bottom of the slag bank with leg injuries, while another was stranded approximately half way down, unable to move in either direction.

Furness Coastguard split into two teams, one coordinating the rescue of the second casualty from the top of the slag bank with the mountain rescue team, while the other half assisted in extracting the casualty with leg injuries to North West Ambulance Service.

Barrow Lifeboat and Millom Coastguard Rescue Team were also called in to assist and provide safety cover as as the tide was quickly rising.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

A spokesperson for the Furness Coastguard said: "This was a great multiagency operation with a positive outcome."

The rescue agencies were called out before 7.30pm.
