A SOCIAL media appeal for wellington boots has brightened up a Kendal care home.

Activities coordinator for Summerhill Nursing and Residential Home, Sean Moore, asked on Facebook for wellies to use as part of a gardening project.

He has since received more than a dozen pairs of boots. Working with residents of the home who suffer from dementia and other mental illnesses, Mr Moore has utilised them as planters.

"I started working at Summerhill Kendal in February as an activities coordinator," he said "The first thing I wanted to do was engage with the local community and businesses.

"Five of the pairs were brand new from Alan Green, the director at the Westmorland Shopping Centre," Mr Moore, 31, said. "Who I'd like to take the time to personally thank as his support has been unbelievable - not only providing the wellies but also a brand new bingo set for the residents and a digital camera."

Mr Moore has also received a large donation of pampering equipment given by The Body Shop in Kendal and Sarah Furey, a beautician from Kendal has also donated her time.

She has offered manicures and pamper sessions to the residents and Mr Moore is pleased with the reaction his activities have received so far.

"The residents have responded really well - especially the wellies. They got so involved with it and you can see that it's actually making a difference," he said. "It's nice to come to work and feel like you are doing something even if it's only for an hour or two."

Mr Moore said that as a musician himself he had come across lots of helpful and talented people who had been happy to offer their time for free.

"Overall the support from local people has been overwhelming with one lady even buying stationary specifically for the residents I work with," Mr Moore said. "There's so many good people out there and they do not get heard about enough.

"I'd like to take this time to thank all those who have supported us and hope that if anyone has anything they feel the residents could benefit from please get in touch at sean.moore@bupa.com"
