STORIES of those who were affected by Kendal's devastating 2015 floods are being retold through a community made tapestry.

Members of the Quaker Tapestry have invited the public to create artwork inspired by Storm Desmond.

Through a series of workshops led by community artist Donna Campbell, the participants are sharing tales of both hope and despair.

Bridget Guest, the general manager at Quaker Tapestry, said that the piece would be a 'celebration' of a community that came together.

"Eventually we are going to have a panel or maybe three panels, a finished wall hanging, inspired by the Quaker Tapestry - the way it was made by a community of 4,000," she said. "This one is celebrating the coming together of the community in Kendal during Storm Desmond in December 2015.

"It's not about the floods as such it's more about celebrating the way that communities rallied around and pulled together and just supported each other in practical ways."

It is not yet known exactly how large the tapestry will be but it is set to be completed in 2018 and it is hoped that it will tour various locations, whether that be the library or the town hall.

Those involved in the workshops have been utilising photographs of the floods for inspiration, as well as their own memories.

Donna Campbell has been guiding participants with sewing, silk painting and felting. For some it is a chance to learn a new skill as well as to share memories and there have been experienced stitchers on hand to help.

"I think textiles has always been an amazing way of recording stories," she said. "Using fabric - it's just lends itself, it always has. Using fabrics and threads as well as paints and dyes just gives it another dimension, it brings it to life."

She said that there was also an element of therapy to the workshops, as they allowed people space to talk about what they had gone through.

"I think it is therapeutic," she said. "When you're doing art you can chat so it's not pressure and it's enjoyable. People can share experiences while they're working and support one another."
