PREVIEW night for the new Julian Cooper show at Abbot Hall was a towering event with one of the largest gatherings ever seen at the Kendal gallery for an exhibition opening.

Staged to tie in with the giant of mountain art's 70th birthday, the Julian Cooper Paintings from 1970-2017 exhibition comprises more than 30 monumental paintings, acting as a powerful distillation of his extensive output, from 1970 to the present day.

Following the most popular launch event Lakeland Arts - which owns Abbot Hall - has ever hosted, in which writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg officially opened the display, the exhibition is expected to be a remarkable success.

Lord Bragg’s speech was inspiring and engaging and he spoke of his appreciation for Julian Cooper’s work that “flows from that initial dart of recognition which makes you ‘like’ something instantly - like love at first sight.”

The record audience agreed with Lord Bragg’s reflection that, “[Julian] has found his own landscape hidden inside the landscapes. Now and in the future we will see differently because of what he’s done.”

Julian Cooper Paintings from 1970-2017 runs until July 2.
