AMERICAN President Donald Trump is the surprise guest at this year's Wray Scarecrow Festival.

Scarecrow-makers recreated the billionaire property tycoon in straw and papier-mâché, complete with his signature blond comb-over and tanned complexion.

Glorious weather greeted the start of Wray's 29th festival and fair at the weekend. Simon Carruthers, who chairs the committee, said the ten-day event attracted visitors from across the country, with some people choosing to spend their annual holiday in Wray year after year.

From Donald Trump to Rapunzel, the Railway Children to the Billy Goats Gruff, around 150 scarecrows large and small have been dotted around the village, both topical and inspired by the 2017 theme, Traditional Tales.

One of the Trump figures is perched atop a wall in the north Lancashire village, beside a scarecrow holding US and Mexican flags; while another, on Main Street, has mechanical features to raise its arms and talk at the press of a button.

Youngsters from Wray Endowed Primary School made two figures - The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the Gingerbread Man - and they have been entertaining festival-goers with traditional displays of Maypole dancing. The school is also selling 500 mini scarecrows to raise funds.

Tomorrow night (Friday) will see a giant scarecrow parade through the village, with street music from the band Blast Furness, followed by a hog roast, bar and entertainment.

The festival and funfair is to continue until Bank Holiday Monday, May 1, complete with vintage market, classic cars and bikes, and Songs of Praise on Sunday; and a fell race, dog agility show, football tournament and Croix du Nord Vikings display on Monday.
