TWO loved members of South Cumbria's football community will be fondly remembered with a special match this Saturday.

The charity game will celebrate the lives of 'cheeky, warm and lovable' Swarthmoor FC goalkeeper Josh West and 'much-loved' Kendal coach Neil Humble.

The talented Ulverston goalie, who would have celebrated his 12th birthday this week, suffered a fatal asthma attack a year ago.

On the day of the game, a special bench will be unveiled at the club grounds in his memory.

Peter Burrows, assistant coach at Swarthmoor FC, said: "Josh was a very talented football player, a real character. If he had been in a room with 99 people he didn't know, they would've known him by the time he left the room."

Neil Humble, of Burneside, who successfully coached junior teams at Kendal United, as well as the ladies' team at Kendal Town, died unexpectedly at his home in Burneside in November, aged 44.

"Neil was such a lovable and likeable guy," said Dan Hartley, secretary of Kendal United Football Club. "He gave his everything to football with his coaching of the two teams.

"He was one of the best, he really was."

An asthma awareness campaign aimed at young people was launched last week in Josh's memory by a group of apprentices from GlaxoSmithKline.

Mr Burrows said: "It's good that Josh's legacy carries on and asthma sufferers are helped in his name in the UK."

The apprentices will deliver a presentation to local sports club coaches, schools, colleges and youth organisations about how to recognise the symptoms and what to do if someone is having an asthma attack.

The campaign is backed by Josh’s parents, Lee and Nicola West, and Dr Mohamed Olabi.

At the time of the launch, Lee West said: “If [the campaign] creates more awareness and stops it happening to anyone else’s child, then it is a fantastic idea."

Spectators are welcome to the match, which will be held at Swarthmoor Football Club on Saturday at 3pm.

An evening event will be held after the game, with food, refreshments and a raffle, and the participants will have opportunity to pay tribute to both Josh and Mr Humble.

Proceeds from the day will be split equally between the Joshua West Foundation and Kendal United.
