ON MARCH 6, 75 pilgrims from various denominations and parts of Cumbria set out from Manchester to go to the Holy Land. Most had no idea what to expect but we were all committed to learning more about our Lord and ourselves as we walked in the steps of Jesus.

So what did we actually encounter - early rising, excellent weather and a hectic schedule which encompassed a multitude of biblical sites from the Sea of Galilee to Gethsemane and the Garden Tomb. Each site made the relevant Bible story come alive as the guides explained each visit from an historical and biblical perspective. At several sites we celebrated communion. These were very special times, often in the open air. It was so inspiring to hear groups from all over the world praising God in their own languages. A real Pentecost experience!

The service by the Sea of Galilee was very moving as we remembered all that took place there. The walk up the Via Dolorosa was steep and uneven and I personally was very aware of the agony Jesus would have felt as He dragged a heavy cross up the hill on a back already dreadfully wounded by the scourging He had received. It was a very meaningful experience for me.

Another highlight for me was the renewal of baptism vows at the place where it is thought Jesus was baptised. To be immersed in that self same river was just awesome and something I will treasure for ever.

For me, and I suspect for many others, this pilgrimage enhanced our faith and deepened our love for the Lord.
