THE Conservative party were the big winners in yesterday's Cumbria County Council elections, but they still fell short of a majority.
The Tories now hold 37 of the county's 84 electoral divisions, but fell six seats short of a majority hold on the council.
In South Lakeland, which saw a turnout of 47 per cent, the Tories gained two seats - High Furness (Matt Brereton) and Windermere (Ben Berry).
They also won four seats in the Barrow district, all of which were previously held by Labour councillors.
However they were unable to secure a majority as the Liberal Democrats gained seats in the Appleby division of Eden, Cockermouth North in Allerdale, and the Dalston and Burgh division of Carlisle.
Labour now has 10 fewer seats in the county following yesterday's elections, going from 36 in the previous chamber to 26 divisions held.
The Liberal Democrats overall gained one seat and now have 16 in the Cumbria County Council chamber.
A Labour-Lib Dem coalition, as was in place from 2013, would also still fall short of a majority at 42 seats.
The remaining five of the elected candidates were all standing as independents.
