THE iconic Grasmere Gingerbread is in the running to be the country's top family business of the year.

The fourth-generation Lake District business is one of four UK regional finalists in this category for this year’s Federation of Small Businesses and Worldpay UK Business Awards.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be a finalist and excited to be in with a chance of picking up the ultimate accolade,” said Joanne Hunter, co-owner of Grasmere Gingerbread.

“It is particularly gratifying to have been recognised be judged by the FSB – in effect, our business peers across the land.”

Since 2000 the business has expanded to create 14 permanent jobs, developed a range of complementary product ranges and developed a mail order and export service.

Joanne was delighted to welcome her 21-year-old daughter Yasmine into the business which has been part of her family for 80 years. She looks after online and digital marketing and events.

Her two younger teenage children, Eden Rose and Eamont, also work in the business during the school holidays.

“Safeguarding the original culinary legacy of Sarah Nelson and her family values of a high-quality products and excellent customer care are our top priorities,” said Joanne.

Joanne and co-owner husband, Andrew, will be attending a gala evening at London’s Globe Theatre on May 10 when the results will be announced.
