FROM Realism to Abstract is an exhibition well worth checking out by one of the region's most versatile artists, running at Grange-over-Sands Library until May 26.

David Best, secretary of Windermere Art Society, can turn his talented hands to either traditional paintings in oils or vibrant abstract acrylics.

Leading up to 2009, David's paintings were mainly traditional oils and acrylics of the Lake District landscape and Herdwick sheep. However, resuming painting in 2012 after an illness, he started to produce work based on fracturing and painting in more abstract shapes and colour, but still retaining the essence of the subject form, influenced by the likes of Cezanne and the Scottish Colourists, and the stained glass and paper cut outs of Matisse.

His latest direction includes elements of cubism influenced by the more structured works of Paul Klee.
