MONTHS of uncertainty over the future of a south Cumbrian zoo looks set to end after councillors agreed to approve a new four-year licence.

South Lakes Safari Zoo at Dalton-in-Furness has only remained open in recent weeks due to appeals against a closure order and a licence refusal in the name of the attraction's founder, David Gill.

But Barrow Borough Council's licensing committee today agreed to grant a new licence once those appeals have been withdrawn.

It will see Cumbria Zoo Company Limited, the operating company, take full control of the site for the next four years.

Councillors today spent seven hours considering inspectors' reports and recommendations as well as hearing from the zoo and other organisations before deciding they would grant a new licence.
