A LAKE District beauty spot has been named in the top 15 most Instagrammed tourist attractions in the UK.

Beating the likes of York Minster and the Angel of the North, Windermere came out at number eight in the list, compiled by online travel agency TravelBird.

By analysing the most 'tagged' attractions on photo-sharing app Instagram, TravelBird found Windermere had been mentioned 215,064 times.

That made it the second-most tagged attraction in the north west, behind Anfield stadium in Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, the two most popular locations in the country were in London, with Big Ben receiving a massive 2,561,617 tags. Buckingham Palace was second with 586,990.

Globally, of 470 places that were ranked, the most Instagrammed place was Disneyland with 14,615,952 mentions. That was more than twice as many as the second-placed Eiffel Tower in Paris.

“This study offers a compelling overview of hundreds of destinations that are beloved by Instagram users for their cultural heritage, their stunning natural beauty and their local charm,” said Symen Jansma, founder of TravelBird.

“Alongside this, the data also tells a fascinating story about the ways people are travelling in 2017, offering valuable insights for the travel and tourism industry.”
