DOZENS of primary school children took part in a cyclocross event at Penny Bridge CE Academy on Saturday.

In the morning the children were encouraged to complete as many laps of the course as they could in 15 minute blocks. The challenging course involved tight corners, steps, bankings and off camber sections.

Later in the day six 'by ability' races were put on with prizes donated by Velo Ulverston. All together the prize fund totalled more than £200.

The 110 children taking part represented many South Lakeland schools and they were: Penny Bridge, Leven Valley, Grange, Flookburgh, Pennington, Low Furness, Thwaites, Croftlands, Burlington, Allithwaite, Beetham, Crosthwaite and Ireleth St Peters.

"It was a fantastic event for all, the children competed with enthusiasm and it was great to get people together from different schools," said deputy head Graham Carrick.
