STAFF at a South Lakeland school are 'bursting with pride' after receiving an 'outstanding' report.

Underley Garden School, at Kirkby Lonsdale, which offers specialist care for young people and adults with autism and complex needs, was given the rating by Ofsted inspectors.

Inspectors found that children and young people made 'exceptional progress' from their starting points, staff regularly went 'above and beyond' their roles and children were offered 'high-quality, personalised and individual care'.

Principal Ann Henderson said that the school had been 'bursting with pride' ever since the March inspection.

"We had to wait until the report had been published before we could share the news with anyone – that was really hard," Mrs Henderson said. "Chris and I are both so proud of the children and the staff that make Underley Garden School a great place to be."

The school provides full time care, education and respite provision for young people from five to 19. It is situated in a country estate on the outskirts of Kirkby Lonsdale and can accommodate up to 48 children.

It was found to be outstanding in terms of the overall experiences and progress of children and young people living in the home and how well children and young people were helped and protected.

The impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers was found to be 'good'. Shortfalls related to records and did not detract from the high-quality care that was offered.

"Children and young people who have complex needs enjoy a settled and stable placement that significantly improves the quality of their lives," the inspection report said.

"The manager and staff team are extremely committed to improving outcomes for all children and young people who live in the home. As a result, children and young people are happy, settled and thriving."

"The staff and young people will now be able to have a celebration here on site, whilst continuing to make further improvements and developments to make us even better," Mrs Henderson said.
