BATTLE injured soldiers took to the waters of Windermere in a range of amphibious vehicles.

Twenty-five wounded soldiers, aged between 25 and 50, were invited from their base in Catterick Garrison to spend time in the Lake District.

The project is the work of David and Doris Forster from Seaham Harbour in County Durham, who wanted to do something to benefit Help for Heroes.

In the last year, the couple have enabled 90 service men and women with a variety of physical injuries and mental health problems to enjoy time in military vehicles and sightseeing in the Lakes.

"They love it," said Mrs Forster. "It was pouring with rain and they were just straight into the water with wetsuits on and others were going on to the DUKW [an amphibious vehicle from the Second World War]. It was really brilliant.

"I could hear them laughing away as each of them were telling each other stories."

"They seem as though they laugh all the time because they are alive."
