Following the horrific attack at Manchester Arena, public figures have paid tribute to the victims.

Tim Farron, parliamentary candidate for the Westmorland and Lonsdale seat, said: “This was a shocking and horrific attack targeting children and young people who were simply enjoying a concert, including some from here in South Lakeland.

“My deepest sympathies are with the victims, and with families who have lost loved ones, as well as those desperately waiting for news.

“This was an attack on innocent people and the nation is united both in its grief and its determination to stand up to this deplorable attack.

“The emergency services have shown the highest levels of bravery and professionalism and deserve our deepest thanks.”

Rory Stewart, parliamentary candidate for the Penrith and Border seat, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the families. This is a horrifying attack. We owe so much to the first response teams and people who acted so bravely.

"Unfortunately, I have spent a lot of my life in countries where events like this are not uncommon. Nothing ever takes away the horror and just how horrifying this is for the families, and how brave people have been in their responses."

The Anglican Bishops from The Church of England’s Diocese of Blackburn have issued a joint statement this morning following the Manchester Arena attack.

The Rt Rev. Julian Henderson, Bishop of Blackburn; the Rt Rev. Geoff Pearson, Bishop of Lancaster and the Rt Rev. Philip North, Bishop of Burnley, said: "We are shocked and appalled by the news of the attack at the Manchester Arena.

"To target an event attended by so many children and young people is barbaric beyond words or belief.

“Our thoughts at this time are with all the victims and most especially those who are unsure about the whereabouts or safety of their loved ones."
