NEW research produced by academics from Lancaster University has suggested how Kendal's evening economy could be boosted.

Included in the report's recommendations are that cafes should stay open later, more live music should be on offer and there should be more of a variety of restaurants.

26 key stakeholders were interviewed as part of the research, including managing director of Cumbria Tourism, Ian Stephens.

Mr Stephens told the Gazette that he thought to stimulate real economic growth he believed that Kendal needed to provide more facilities to welcome some of the 43 million visitors heading to Cumbria each year.

"The town should also make the most of its special location at the centre of a high-quality food producing area," he said. "For instance, markets, inns and restaurants should be encouraged to forge stronger marketing and links with Kendal College. Or what about a roof top restaurant, or a contemporary dining experience at Kendal Castle linked by lifts or even a cable car?"
