PLANS by Kirkbie Kendal School for a 2.4m fence met with approval from planners.

As reported by the Gazette, the Kendal secondary school sought planning consent for a green, powder-coated steel fence on the east boundary of its Lound Road site.

The plans have now been given the go-ahead by South Lakeland District Council under delegated powers.

Head teacher Phil Hyman told parents in his February letter that a fence would be restored around the perimeter of school, and a photo ID badge would be introduced for sixth formers, to "improve site security".

As reported by the Gazette, Ofsted's inspection process has seen two schools previously rated good placed in special measures. Queen Katherine School, Kendal, and Kirkby Stephen Grammar School were deemed inadequate after inspectors said there were shortcomings in their safeguarding measures.
