A rare photograph has been discovered showing a group of young Holocaust survivors walking in the Lake District in 1945. We are attempting to recreate the scene using young people of today and would appreciate help readers can offer about where the location might be.

It is thought to overlook Windermere as the young people in the photograph were staying at Calgarth Estate, which once stood where the Lakes School now stands.

I attended the annual 45 Aid Society and Second Generation Holocaust Survivor reunion in London recently, an event organised by, and including, these young Holocaust Survivors who came to Windermere and who are in the photograph.

The survivors numbers are dwindling but their families keep up the tradition and the event is a wonderful time of celebration as the second, third and fourth generations come together to commemorate the resilience of the human spirit in the face of the most dreadful circumstances.

Windermere has a special place in their hearts and this photograph had an amazing impact on those who saw it.

Any ideas as to the location are welcomed and either email info@ldhp.org.uk or drop a note into Windermere Library.
