OUTLINE plans for 12 new homes at Arkholme, in the Lune Valley, have attracted 51 letters of objection.

Arkholme-with-Cawood Parish Council and David Morris, Conservative candidate for the Morecambe and Lunesdale constituency, are among those opposed. Mr Morris has raised concerns about highway safety and the scheme's effect on "the fabric of the village".

Lancaster City Council's planning and highways regulatory committee is recommended to refuse the plans by Mr T Jenkinson when it meets on Wednesday (May 31).

The site, south-west of Thorneycroft, Kirkby Lonsdale Road, is outside Arkholme's main built-up area and the new homes would encroach on the open countryside, according to a report by planning officers. Key concerns from objectors include:

- the land not being earmarked for housing in the Local Plan

- a lack of demand for new homes in Arkholme

- a 67 per cent increase in the village's housing since The Herb Gardens scheme was built (including new and planned schemes)

- access off a narrow, 60mph road with no footpaths.

- and the lack of a shop, garage, healthcare and bus service.

Six letters of support have also been received, saying the site is ideal for family homes and will provide affordable dwellings; and that extra housing would help to make a village shop viable.
