THE appeal to save a Lune Valley village's pool is making a splash.

Supporters from as far away as Peru and the USA have added their financial pledges to the campaign to reopen Hornby Community Swimming Pool.

More than £15,000 has been pledged so far, and Bob McGachie, chairman of the appeal group, said this showed the "depth of enthusiasm" for efforts to save the 40-year-old pool.

The Melling Road leisure facility was closed and mothballed by Lancaster City Council in March due to funding shortages. Generations of residents from Hornby and surrounding villages have learned to swim at the pool since it opened in 1977 after a massive community effort.

Since the closure, swimmers and supporters have set up the Lune Valley Community Society in their bid to take ownership of the pool.

People across the community have been invited to pledge their financial support, at £25 per share, with the money to be paid upon the pool's hoped-for transfer to the community society.

Mr McGachie told a recent meeting at Hornby Institute: "This amount of share pledge support clearly demonstrates depth of enthusiasm for our campaign to reopen the pool for the future safety, health, wellbeing and recreation of Lune Valley families, friends and visitors."
