CARNIVAL-goers sheltered from the hot sun beneath decorated umbrellas as they processed through Bentham.

The vintage theme of this year's Carnival Bentham brought fairground rides and sideshows like hook-a-duck, hoopla and a merry-go-round to the North Yorkshire market town.

"It was absolutely fabulous," said Mike Redfern, chair of the carnival team, "probably the best day we've ever had. Of course the weather helped; it was cracking the flags with sunshine."

Townsfolk also took a trip down memory lane by browsing old photographs and memorabilia in the popular four-day exhibition, Stuff from the Attic.

"We are very keen on keeping both the oral and visual history of the town going," said Mr Redfern. "One of the key things about our procession was that photos were taken of the people watching it, so that in 20, 30, 40 years someone else can put an exhibition together."

Mr Redfern thanked the team at Bentham Auction Mart for their invaluable help with staging the carnival, and paid tribute to Bentham-based arts and health charity Pioneer Projects, which ran umbrella-decorating workshops.
