This photograph of J. Wardley and Sons Timber Merchants of Slackhead was taken in the mid-1930s between Natland and Kendal, near the old canal bridge.

The people in the woods are not known but from the left on the road are: Arthur Atkinson (my grandfather); Harry Bolton; possibly Ernie Pearson of Milnthorpe; Harry Howson or William Houghton, a JP from Haverbrack, near Beetham; Eric Balmer (better known as Blossom), and leading the horses is Dick Atkinson (Arthur's son and my uncle).

The car is a Morris 10 with a Dickie seat in the back. The wagon is a Bedford 5-tonner and the horses are all Shire/Clydesdale cross.

This photograph has been in my family's possession for many years.

Eric Atkinson
