CUMBRIA'S brightest prospects in stockjudging competed in a county-wide competition.

The Stockman and Young Stockjudge of the Year, hosted by Newton Rigg College at Sewborwens Farm, Newton Rigg, attracted Young Farmers Club's from all over the county.

Young farmers ranked four dairy cows, four butchers’ beef cattle, four breeding sheep and four butchers’ lambs.

They also completed an animal health questionnaire compiled by Richard Knight, of Westmorland Veterinary Group.

The Ian Graham Rose Bowl for the senior member gaining the most points in the Stockman of the Year competition was won by Henry Knowles of Grayrigg YFC.

Will Horsley from Skelton YFC was placed second. Alice Longmire from Lowick YFC and Matthew Emmott of Greysouthern YFC were placed third and fourth respectively.

Jessica Wharton of Longtown YFC won the Bronwyn Chester Trophy for Young Stockjudge of the Year with Henry Crocker, Skelton YFC, placed second and Matthew Fearon of Greysouthern YFC taking third place. Emma Atkinson of Brampton YFC was placed fourth.

The Harrison and Hetherington Trophy for the team with the most points was presented to Greysouthern YFC. Eden Valley YFC were placed second and Skelton YFC were placed third.

Teams will now go forward to represent Cumbria at the Northern Area Stockman of the Year/Young Stockjudge of the Year competition hosted by Northumberland YFC at Hexham Auction Mart on the July 15.
