MOUNTAIN bikers braved wet, windy Lake District weather to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK.
The ever-popular Sam Houghton Mountain Bike Challenge saw 500 cyclists - and one runner - ride out in memory of Staveley villager and student Sam, who was just 22 when he died in May 2006.
Sam's mum, Brenda Houghton, told the Gazette an impressive £141,000 had been raised by the annual event up until last year - with Saturday's challenge likely to add £15,000 to that total.
