GRASMERE Sports, one of the best-known events on the Lake District calendar, is seeking an "energetic" new manager.

George Gale, who has managed the traditional show for more than nine years, is to step down in 2018.

The event's directors say the successful applicant will take over responsibility for the trade stands for the year running up to the 2018 sports, shadowing George, before assuming the full role of sports manager following the 2018 event.

Chairman Hal Bagot says he expects the part-time, salaried job to attract plenty of interest. "George has done a magnificent job as sports manager for Grasmere Sports for all these years and will be a hard act to follow," said Mr Bagot. "We should like to thank him very much for his dedication to the role.

"We are now seeking a new face; someone with great organisational skills and fresh ideas, to successfully drive the event into the future."

Grasmere Sports is traditionally held on the Sunday of August Bank Holiday weekend. Steeped in history, it attracts around 5,000 visitors to the tiny village and is now in its 167th year, with this year's show to take place on August 27.

Highlights include Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, hound trails, fell running for adults and children, children’s sprint races and the ever-popular dog show. Competitors for the revered wrestling contests travel from as far away as Iceland and France.
