Peter Gaukroger and Peter Holme (Letters, June 16) both highlight one of the many reasons why we should not be transporting nuclear warheads on our local roads and why we should not be parking them overnight close to residential areas.

They emphasise that such weapons of mass destruction provide a ready target for any terrorist intent on reeking death and destruction among us.

At the same time Mr Gaukroger asserts with apparent confidence that maintenance of the vehicles 'will be of the highest standard', but in doing so, seems to have missed the very pertinent fact that the convoy which left the Atomic Weapons Establishment on May 16, 2017 and subsequently drove up the M6 caused a complete stoppage of traffic at Junction 9 on the M40 while a tow truck removed one of the vehicles which had broken down!

He also tells us that he thinks the 'risk of an accident' is 'minimal', having apparently also missed the admissions by the Ministry of Defence, in response to requests under freedom of information law, that no less than 180 safety incidents had plagued nuclear warhead convoys between 2000 and 2016.

The fact is that it is nothing short of madness to transport nuclear warheads on our local motorways. It is time to ban all nuclear convoys from our roads.
