A KENDAL man has been selected as a regional finalist in the annual search by Screwfix to find and reward Britain’s Top Tradesperson 2017.

Maintenance tradesman Joe Cottam, 46, is now one step closer to heading to the national final at Wembley after seeing off competition from tradesmen and women from across the North West.

Eight regional finalists from across the nation will be selected to attend the national final to be in with a chance of winning the coveted national title and recognition, along with a brand new Toyota PROACE or Hilux worth £32,000.

On Saturday Mr Cottam will have to impress judges at the regional final while going head-to-head against other successful candidates.

Mr Cottam, who trades under the name Just Call Joe, thinks his determination for success, customer-focused mind-set and passion for the industry will help him to stand out from the crowd.

“I started work at 16 years old at a construction company as a bricklayer/ general builder," said Mr Cottam. "After five years trade experience I went on to gain a degree in construction management and then spent three years in contract management prior to pursuing a career teaching at Highlands College, Jersey, where I worked for nearly 17 years and was the head of department.

"I enjoy meeting different people every day as a handyman and knowing that no one day is like the next. As a maintenance tradesman, I am able to leave every day with instant feedback and gratification from clients.”

Screwfix Marketing Director, Graham Smith, said: "We have been inundated with entries this year and as always, the standard is outstanding. This award is only given to those who demonstrate excellence in their business and dedication to the job. Being selected as a regional finalist highlights the great work that Joe is doing."

Joe will take part in the North West heat at the Stockport Screwfix store on Saturday. He will take part in a number of tasks to find out if he has got what it takes to head to the national final of Britain’s Top Tradesperson in July.
