WATERWAYS enthusiast Colin Ogden is hoping to adopt the historic Tewitfield Locks on the Lancaster Canal.

The Lancashire heating engineer, who runs the Owd Lanky Boaters group on Facebook, is responding to a call from the Canal and River Trust for volunteers to help look after stretches of canal.

Mr Ogden, 63, of Elswick, near Garstang, is seeking to take over the historic flight of eight locks on the Cumbria/Lancashire border, at Tewitfield, near Carnforth.

He told the Gazette hopes were high after a "very friendly and forward-thinking meeting" with the trust, which is custodian of more than 2,000 miles of waterway in England and Wales.

Mr Ogden plans to set up a community interest company (CIC) to manage the project if it comes to fruition. His Owd Lanky Boaters group has now topped 1,000 members on Facebook.
