HUNDREDS of young people have been given the chance to get fit in a fun and active way, thanks to the generosity of local funders.

The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Andy Blackman was invited to officially open the new 200 metre all-weather trim track at the school, together with Mike Conefrey from Cumbria County Council's Public Health Department and DeanChappelhow from Cumberland Building Society.

Other funders included Lakes Leisure, Lakeland Ltd and Friends of Castle Park School.

Cllr Blackman was assisted in opening the track by two members of the school’s support staff, Jo Dixon and Jane Harrington, who are both celebrating 30 years of service at the school.

Head teacher Helen Richardson said “This is a wonderful facility and we are so grateful to all the local funders who have generously donated towards it.

"The children use it daily with their teachers, including lunchtimes with our midday supervisors and during their PE lessons. The daily exercise is supporting the school’s efforts to improve the general fitness, stamina and mental health of the pupils, as well as helping address the issue of childhood obesity.

"We have found that, not only are the children more alert and ready to learn after using the Trim Track, but they now challenge themselves to run further each day.

"Ms Harrington and Mrs Dixon between them, have taught over 900 children during their time and we hope that they will stay with us for many years to come.”
