HAVING spent many years enjoying the pleasures of water sports on Windermere I am dismayed and extremely concerned at the sharp increase in Canada Geese around all areas of the lake.

Over the last three weeks I have observed a group of 50 or more goslings leaving Tommy Holme, at the back of Belle Isle, for their evening swim.

The number of this year's young birds is alarming. At how many other areas of the lake and surrounding lakes and tarns are such worrying numbers to be seen?

I understand that their droppings on the newly refurbished (at great expense) area of foreshore on Glebe Road are so extensive and severe that power washing by the local authority has little effect.

A single Canada goose leaves large quantities of faeces, up to two-three kilogrammes per day. Surely this is a severe health hazard, especially to children playing in the area, not to mention the pollution in the lake and ruining any areas of grass on the lakes foreshore.

When is someone going to make the decision to carry out a hard and effective cull?
