THOUSANDS of racegoers and music fans are getting ready for what promises to be a sensational weekend as Tom Jones will play his first concert in the South Lakes in 50 years.

The music legend – whose iconic hits span six decades – will take to the stage at Cartmel Racecourse tomorrow evening.

He last played south Cumbria back in 1966 when he played Barrow’s 99 Club before heading off to the USA to make his debut there.

Fans at the Cartmel show are assured of a fantastic night as Tom and his band present a stunning set-list built from a career that traverses all eras and genres of popular music.

The show is presented by North West-based music promoters Cuffe and Taylor.

Director Peter Taylor said: “The excitement has been building ever since we announced this show and we cannot wait for Friday.

“We have done many shows across the UK with Sir Tom over the last few years and what we can guarantee is that this will be an amazing, unique and unforgettable experience.

“Tom Jones is simply a music icon whose live shows are the stuff of legend. Bringing him to such a picturesque and stunning location as Cartmel is a massive thrill for us and I am sure the thousands of music fans and racegoers will have a sensational night that will live long in the memory.”

Jonathan Garratt, racecourse managing director, said: “It’s Not Unusual for racegoers to have a wonderful time at Cartmel Races – and that has never rung truer than it will on Friday.

“The one and only Tom Jones is here and this is going to be a really special day for everyone connected with Cartmel Races. This man is behind some of the most recognisable and memorable songs of the last 50 years and there is going to be a real party atmosphere."

Sir Tom will take to the stage following an afternoon of top quality flat racing. Gates open from 11am. The first race is at 2.20pm and last at 5.20pm

First on stage following the races will be The Tailormade, an indie pop three-piece who are opening for the likes of Little Mix, Olly Murs and The Beach Boys this summer.

They will be followed by Into The Ark, the sensational duo Sir Tom coached all the way to the final of ITV’s The Voice.

The concert starts approximately 45 minutes after racing and will conclude at around 8.30pm.

It is advised for those travelling by taxi these are booked for 9pm or after.
