THE streets of Carnforth were filled with onlookers for the town's third carnival since the event's 2015 revival.

Shops were bedecked with bunting and 15 decorated floats processed along Market Street to the showfield at Carnforth High School, where the carnival queen, princess, rosebud and male attendant were crowned. Large crowds enjoyed entertainment and live music well into the afternoon and evening.

"It was fantastic," said carnival vice-chair Kara Antonsen. "Everything went smoothly and the parade went really well.

"The streets were full and there was a really good atmosphere."

Decorated floats were entered by local businesses and groups including the Royal Station Hotel, Carnforth Rangers FC and Burch Tree Vets; with Carnforth 1st Scouts scooping first prize.

This year's Carnforth in Bloom competition also attracted many entrants. Among householders, first place went to Gail Brown, whose horticultural efforts extended to dressing up the whole park at Alexandra Road, said vice-chair Kara.

The Harrison family of Dunkirk Avenue came second, with Arthur McQuade of Lancaster Road third.

The Spar shop at Highfield Road won best business display, with Hazee Daze tanning shop in second place, and florist shop Designer Flowers by Lisa, at Lancaster Road, third.

Carnforth Carnival was revived in 2015 to great acclaim, and experienced its heyday during the 1970s and 80s, when a string of famous faces led the parade of marching bands and floats through the streets.

They included Emmerdale Farm star Stan Richards, who appeared in his character Seth Armstrong's gamekeeper's hat at the 1988 carnival, its silver jubilee. Crossroads actor Paul Henry, who played handyman Benny Hawkins, was the VIP in 1986.

The 2018 carnival is to take place on July 7 and organisers are hoping to attract many more decorated float entries.
