A CAMPAIGN seeking a review of controversial ticket machines for the Windermere Ferry has won a step forward.

The machines were installed in June 2016 by Cumbria County Council, but users have struggled to use them which has resulted in delays on the lake shore.

Signs have even been put up reminding people not to be abusive towards the ferry staff who have been getting the brunt of customers' complaints.

A motion urging members to look at the machines was presented to the authority's full council by Windermere Conservative councillor Ben Berry.

He said he had recently witnessed a car crash as one vehicle tried to overtake another attempting to buy a ticket.

"The ferry is a fantastic asset for Hawkshead, Bowness and Windermere but the present situation is causing angst, animosity and is dangerous," he said.

Cllr Berry had called for a 'member-led review' into the ferry operations with aims of identifying a 'swift, secure' payment system available on board.

Opposition councillors agreed a review should take place, but said the most appropriate place for it to be discussed would be at the council's cabinet to speed up the process rather than forming a working group.

Cllr Sue Sanderson (Lib Dem for Cartmel), said: "Cabinet is the place where responsibility lies, where people can ask questions and when there is scrutiny of what happens.

"Don't be left in any doubt that I would not follow up people's views."

Cllr Janet Willis (Lib Dem for Low Furness) echoed that sentiment, saying: "We want to resolve this matter quickly and I think that will speed it up."

Cllr Berry agreed it was 'fantastic' everyone agreed a review is needed, but was sceptical about its success given the Cabinet is run by Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

"This has moved from the shores of Windermere to the county hall but if you do back track I will be there. I was told by a ferry staff member I was being awkward and I will be awkward here too. It's quite clear where the review by cabinet is going to go."
