DALTON-IN-FURNESS students are to set off to Malaysia for a three week 'world challenge expedition'.

After two years of planning, 13 Dowdales School students will head to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (July 15) to take part in jungle trekking, rafting, snorkelling and volunteer in a children’s refugee centre.

The team of students, who have just completed year 11, have raised the £3,425 each needed to go on the trip as well as coping with GCSE’s and getting all of their vaccinations.

Headteacher Julie O’Connor said: "I have no doubt in my mind that this expedition will be a life changing experience for our students, trekking with heavy backpacks, being self-sufficient, spending time with refugee children helping to improve their quality of life and their learning environment and learning how to navigate themselves around a country so very different to their own."
