A FAMILY in Bolton-le-Sands won the prize for best large garden in the village, for the second year running.

Retired teachers Peter and Teresa Waddington, who live with their disabled son Andrew, scooped the title for their wildlife-friendly grounds at Coastal Road.

Mr Waddington told the Gazette the garden gave Andrew a great deal of pleasure. The 24-year-old chose white as this year's colour theme for the planting outside his window, as opposed to red in 2016's winning scheme.

Andrew uses a wheelchair and communicates by leaning in answer to questions, or blinking, explained his father. The family's carefully tended plot features a stream ending in a small pond near Andrew's room.

Bolton-le-Sands' annual horticultural competition saw judges spend "two very pleasurable afternoons" touring gardens around the village.

The best small garden title went to Don Hack, of Lowlands Road, who also scored most points; and best patio garden to Bev Chadwick, of Lowlands Road.

One of the judges, Barry Atack, commented: "We have had a slight drop in number of entries this year, but some of the same names come back year after year, vying for and changing position, showing competition is keen."

Trophies are to be awarded at the summer flower show on Saturday, August 12, from 2pm to 4.15pm, at Bolton-le-Sands Community Centre.
