UMBRELLA displays and six new trails taking in some of Kendal's best known landmarks are set to launch for the summer holidays.

Kendal's Business Improvement District (BID) is behind the venture, having worked with the team at Felltarn Friends to produce the guides.

Four of the trails are aimed at young school children and the two adult trails focus around historic sites in the town and evening establishments.

Sarah Williams, manager of Kendal BID said that it was all about helping visitors to explore Kendal.

"The whole thing is to make Kendal jolly happy," she said. "And to get people wandering around Kendal rather than just sticking to the main streets, especially if they don't know Kendal."

Amy Onyango, of Felltarn Friends, said at Kendal's AGM that it was hoped the trails would be good for business as well as fun for children.

"We've given everybody the opportunity to take part by having something in the window," she explained. "So that kids can go round and find something in the window so it's increasing the footfall in the town and increasing business awareness."

The leaflets can be picked up from around 40 different locations, including Windermere Tourist Information Centre, Brew Brothers and Charlie's Cafe Bar.

Incorporated into the trails will be umbrella displays, situated at Wainwright's Yard, Westmorland Shopping Centre and the Elephant Yard.

Speaking at Kendal's AGM, chair of the BID, Daniel Morley said that it was about creating a 'little bit of drama in the town'.

At the meeting, Sarah added: "It's about celebrating the fact that yes it does rain here but actually it's okay and come to Kendal and 'we've got it covered'."

The four children trails, which will be displayed on two separate leaflets, invite those using them to find clues and give ideas for what to do in the town.

"It's about bringing families into Kendal," Sarah said. "Because as a mum it is actually really difficult to do things with your children over the summer."

The umbrellas will be going on display tomorrow (July 21) and will be up until after Kendal Torchlight Carnival. Visit https://visit-kendal.co.uk/ to keep up-to-date.
