CUMBRIA Steam Gathering powers into Cark Airfield, Flookburgh, near Grange-over-Sands, for its 45th showing this Saturday and Sunday (July 29 & 30). Set to be as loud, colourful and fun-packed as ever, the gathering showcases a spectacular variety of steam engines, vintage commercial vehicles, hundreds of classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, as well as farm equipment and stationery engines to admire and enjoy. The event is catered for by a variety of food outlets and a fully licensed bar area, as well as a temporary sandpit for youngsters, Mr Alexanders Travelling Show, a Clip & Climb climbing wall, plus birds of prey display by Joe’s Owls. FESTIVAL season is once again upon us and Kendal Calling is no less a pull for locals and avid KC fans from far and wide. The Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, Tinie Tempah and Franz Ferdinand are among the eclectic acts already signed up for this award-winning annual festival, held at Lowther Deer Park, near Penrith, from tonight (Thursday) to Sunday (July 27-30), times vary on each day. DINOSAUR Encounter at Rheged Centre, near Penrith. Fans of all ages who just love dinosaurs have got to visit this jaw-dropping, prehistoric exhibition, on loan from the Natural History Museum. There are ten intricately detailed head-to-tail models, with state-of-the-art animatronics and sound effects that will transport you back millions of years to the Triassic, Jurassic and the Cretaceous periods. There’s a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Ankylosaurus, Baryonyx, Ornithomimus, Triceratops and Oviraptor. Study replicas of ancient fossils and a skull of a T-Rex and watch in awe at the 3D printing technology – recreating ancient fossils that have been scanned and shared from museums around the world. THE Romans Are Coming! Visit Lancaster Castle this Saturday & Sunday (July 29 & 30) - witness Legio VIII Augusta and learn all about Roman life in Lancaster. A living history encampment featuring a soldiers barrack block, a household display and various crafts, such as metal and leather work. Visitors will have the chance to talk to knowledgeable re-enactors about Roman military and civilian life and see replica armour and artefacts up close. Activities include Roman archery, Roman coin stamping demos, training and battle tactic demonstrations (noon and 3pm) The event opens at 10.30am to 5pm each day.

THRELKELD Quarry Museum’s Annual Steam Gala, in aid of local charities, takes place on Saturday & Sunday (July 29 & 30) from 10am to 5pm. Sir Tom, the resident steam locomotive will be joined by five more visiting engines, so rides galore for everyone! Also, the 1909 Ruston Steam Navvy will be demonstrated as well as some of the 80 vintage excavators that can be viewed on the site.Threlkeld Quarry is just off B5322 (CA12 4TT). CARTMEL Agricultural Show promises a full day of activities and competitions on the picturesque parkland setting of Cartmel Racecourse. Events such as show-jumping, dog show, dog agility team displays, birds of prey, vintage tractor display, kids mounted fancy dress competition, food hall where local chefs prepare a selection of local dishes, carriage driving, animal classes, village industries and much more including kids entertainment. The show takes place on Wednesday (August 2). Gates open 8.30am.
