REPORTS of cold calling fish sellers operating from a white van in the Levens and Heversham areas have been received by Cumbria County Council's Trading Standards department.
Villagers are being urged to be wary and to report any uninvited fish salesman as they often prey on the most vulnerable who are less likely to refuse what may appear to be a bargain.
A department spokesman said: "Fish sellers visiting Cumbria are known to engage in cold calling activities asking residents to purchase large amounts of frozen fish on the doorstep.
"This fish is generally of poor quality, unrefrigerated and short weight. Doorstep sellers often demand a cash or cheque payment and can be very persuasive in their selling techniques."
