A MAN'S life was saved thanks to the help of a smartphone app.

The team were called yesterday (July 24) by Cumbria Police after they received a report that a young walker had fallen near Hart Crag.

The man had given the name of a nearby hill, Hart Crag, in his first 999 call but team leader Mike Blakey said that this did not 'stack up' with the description of the area he gave on the phone when he spoke to him.

As the young man was unable to provide an accurate location, Mr Blakey used the Find My Friends app to work out a grid reference for the man.

A team was then sent to the man's location with the aid of a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Prestwick in Scotland and the Great North Air Ambulance.

Once located the Coastguard Helicopter was able to winch the man out of the gully and away to hospital.

The man had fallen 60 feet down the gully, stopping short of falling on and over the front of the crags.

He was released later in the day having only suffered bruising.
