POLICE officers are continuing to search this morning for a driver involved in a collision in Ulverston on Wednesday afternoon (July 26).

The collision occurred in the area of the A5087 at the junction of Park Road and Priory Road, and involved a black VW Polo and a male cyclist.  

The male cyclist, a 24-year-old man from the Ulverston area, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital via air ambulance. He remains in a critical condition this morning and his family remain with him, and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police were actively looking for the vehicle at the time of the collision following incidents committed in the Lancashire area.  

The vehicle has since been located by police abandoned in the nearby area.

The male driver involved in the Lancashire incidents is described as 5ft 10 inches, with dark blonde hair, of stocky build, wearing jeans and a white-coloured t-shirt.

Supt Rob O’Connor said: “The driver involved in this collision is not believed to live locally, and we continue to make every effort today to trace him. We would urge him to contact the police immediately.

“We continue to ask that anyone who believes they know the whereabouts of this man contacts police immediately and does not make any attempt to approach him themselves.”

Cumbria Constabulary has contacted the IPCC to make the body aware of the incident as there were a number of officers in the area at the time of the collision.
